The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) is pleased to announce the implementation of the VerifiedID@SG scheme from 1 Nov 2013 after a successful six-month trial. VerifiedID@SG is a verification scheme aimed at enhancing the trustworthiness of .sg domain names by minimising identity theft incidences and the use of fake identities to register .sg domain names.
SGNIC had earlier commenced a pilot of the VerifiedID@SG scheme on 2 May 2013.
SGNIC is pleased that the scheme has been readily accepted by registrants and their appointed administrative contacts, who found the verification process to be hassle-free and easy to complete.
With the introduction of the VerifiedID@SG scheme, the identity of the registrants for all new .sg domain names and websites would have to be verified by its administrative contact, who in turn would have verified his/her identity online via SingPass. SGNIC believes that the public would be safer and more assured when they interact and transact with .sg websites.
About VerifiedID@SG
VerifiedID@SG affects all new ".sg" domain names registration (i.e. domain names ending with .sg – e.g. com.sg, org.sg, net.sg, edu.sg, per.sg, gov.sg and .sg) registered after 2 May 2013.
Under VerifiedID@SG, .sg domain name registrants will continue with the existing practice of appointing an "administrative contact" to register .sg domain names through SGNIC's accredited registrars.
VerifiedID@SG will utilise SingPass (Singapore Personal Access) to identify the domain name registrant through the administrative contact, who will be asked to log into the VerifiedID@SG portal using their SingPass ID, and in turn verify the identity and contact information of the domain name registrant.
The administrative contact will have 21 calendar days from the date of registration to verify the registrant's identity and contact information. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to the suspension of the domain name. This will help to prevent any possible abuse of domain names by registrants who use fake or stolen identity, or whose identities have not been properly verified. At the same time, registrants can and will be held accountable for the content that is uploaded on their websites, reducing occurrences of unlawful uses.
