The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) Pte Ltd is committed to providing Internet registry and information services in an efficient, effective and reliable manner to enhance the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure in Singapore and to foster the integrity and growth of .SG domain names.
- Establish and implement an effective policy and registration framework for administering the registration
and promoting the growth of .SG domain names
- Provide a Domain Name System (DNS) to enhance the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet infrastructure;
- Implement relevant emerging technologies and services in the area of DNS, and to develop the policy and technical
frameworks necessary for their implementation; and
- Raise technical competency of the Internet community in supporting DNS through organising workshops and
forums on best practices and technical knowledge of DNS.
History of SGNIC
SGNIC was formed in October 1995 with the main purpose of administering the Internet domain name space in Singapore as well as to provide a forum for the local Internet Service Providers and regulatory bodies to discuss issues related to the efficient administration of internet services in Singapore
In June 1997, SGNIC was incorporated as a private limited company, wholly-owned by the National Computer Board (NCB). SGNIC was subsequently transferred to the *Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) when the government merged the NCB and the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore on 1 December 1999.
Today, SGNIC is the appointed national registry responsible for authorising and regulating the registration, administration and
management of domain name ending with the .SG Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD).
*From 1 Oct 2016, SGNIC became a subsidiary of Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) when IDA and MDA (Media Development Authority of Singapore) merged to form IMDA.
